Mrs. Dharitri Patnaik, a name synonymous with philanthropy, entrepreneurship, and social change, has carved a unique niche for herself in various spheres of influence. Today, she stands as the Managing Director of Jivada, Chairperson of Diversified Energy Solutions Private Limited (DESPL), Founder of Hamara Bachpan Trust (HBT), and the Founding Chair of the FICCI Ladies Organization (FLO) Odisha Chapter. Moreover, she plays a crucial role as the Chief Coordinator of Women20 (W20) for G20 India, striving to foster women’s economic empowerment on a global scale.
Dharitri’s academic journey is as impressive as her professional achievements. She completed her schooling in Odisha, followed by undergraduate studies at BJB College. Her passion for social development led her to TISS, where she specialized in criminology and correctional administration. A stint at Harvard University, where she earned a Master’s in Public Administration, further honed her expertise in public policy and entrepreneurship.
Starting her career in criminology, she worked closely with under-trials and prisoners, emphasizing rehabilitation and second chances. This early exposure to marginalized individuals shaped her belief in the potential for change with the right support. One poignant example is her decision to bring home a man charged with multiple crimes, counseling him, and helping him set up his own business. This experience laid the foundation for her empathetic approach to entrepreneurship.
Jivada, Dharitri’s latest venture, epitomizes her commitment to sustainability, inclusivity, and holistic wellness. The brand, which launched in April 2024, focuses on wellness, beauty, and hospitality, aiming to align body, soul, and mind. It stands out in the crowded beauty market by targeting maturing skin, which Dharitri describes as skin affected by daily exposure to the sun, stress, and environmental pollutants, regardless of age.
Jivada’s products are a blend of traditional Ayurvedic wisdom and cutting-edge technology, featuring a plethora of hero ingredients known for their efficacy.
“Our emphasis is on creating products that are toxin-free, ethically sourced, and effective across all skin types,” says Dharitri. “We aim for a clutter-free, minimalist approach to skincare, addressing multiple concerns with a single product to fit the modern, busy lifestyle.”
Jivada sources ingredients from women farmers and tribal communities, ensuring fair wages and ethical practices. Plans are underway to set up manufacturing units in remote tribal areas, fostering local entrepreneurship and economic development. Moreover, It aims to become plastic-neutral by engaging in extensive recycling campaigns, exemplified by its scheduled plastic collection drive on World Environment Day.
Dharitri’s commitment to women’s empowerment is unwavering. Through her NGO, Humara Bachpan Trust (HBT), she has initiated several programs to uplift women in tribal and rural areas of Odisha. One notable initiative is Sambavi, which focuses on skill development, financial literacy, and digital literacy. This program has trained thousands of women, enabling them to become self-sufficient entrepreneurs in fields like stitching, soap making, and traditional crafts.
As the founding chair of FICCI Ladies Organization (FLO) Odisha, Dharitri has inspired countless women to venture into entrepreneurship. From homemakers to businesswomen, many have found their calling under her guidance, starting successful enterprises in food, fashion, and more.
The journey to success has not been without obstacles. Dharitri has faced numerous challenges, from local issues in setting up her wellness resort to navigating the complexities of the infrastructure sector. Her experience underscores the importance of a supportive ecosystem, both at home and in the broader community.
“It’s crucial to have shared responsibilities and support from family and society,” she emphasizes. “Women often sacrifice their dreams for the greater good, but with the right support, they can achieve anything.”
Her journey from a criminology student to a multifaceted entrepreneur and social activist is marked by a consistent application of her core values. Guided by the teachings of Sri Aurobindo and the mother of Pondicherry, she showcases how personal philosophy and values can shape one’s approach to business and social impact.
With plans to take Jivada global, Dharitri envisions her brand as the first from Odisha to achieve international acclaim. “We aim to launch in the US, Canada, Mexico, and other countries soon,” she reveals. “Our goal is to be an ambassador of sustainable beauty and wellness from Odisha to the world.”
Balancing multiple roles is challenging, but she credits her spiritual practices, family support, and diverse interests for keeping her grounded. Meditation, dancing, and a strong social network help her manage stress and maintain a positive outlook. Despite her busy schedule, she finds joy in small moments and values the support of her extended family.
Reflecting on her journey, she speaks of the influence of her father’s legacy, emphasizing self-made success and the importance of leaving behind a meaningful impact rather than material wealth. This perspective informs her approach to both her nonprofit and commercial projects, driving her to create initiatives that transform lives and address global issues like climate change. She candidly shares her disdain for the superficial flaunting of success on social media, preferring to focus on genuine impact and legacy. Her success is defined not by early accolades but by sustained effort, resilience, and the ability to achieve set milestones.
