A man who seamlessly bridges the worlds of business and social service, his narrative is one of dedication, vision, and an unwavering commitment to uplifting the community.
A Dual Path: Entrepreneurship and Service
Yagyansis Mohapatra’s life unfolds in two significant dimensions – as an astute businessman and a devoted social worker. His business journey began after completing an MBA from IBAM, New Delhi, when he chose to create his own path instead of succumbing to the routine corporate grind. The turning point was organizing a successful trade fair in Bhubaneswar under the leadership of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik. Despite the accolades, Yagyansis realized that the profits were not equitably shared. This epiphany inspired him to establish Torrent Advertisers, aimed at providing affordable and efficient advertising solutions while generating jobs for others.
“With dedication, hard work, and perseverance, I made my business a success,” he reflects. Yet, his heart yearned for a greater purpose, leading him to Rotary International, a global service organization that epitomizes the motto “Service Above Self.”
A Passion for Rotary
For Yagyansis, Rotary is more than an organization; it’s a movement for societal transformation. He describes it as a platform that enables individuals from diverse professions to step beyond their work and actively contribute to the community. Rotary has not only eradicated polio globally but is now spearheading efforts to achieve 100% literacy in India by 2035.
His Rotary journey began in earnest in 2018 when he became President of Rotary Club of Bhubaneswar Toshali. His tenure saw his club and leadership being recognized as the best in Odisha. The accolades didn’t stop there. Yagyansis went on to serve as Assistant Governor in 2019-20, Additional District Secretary General in 2020-21, and Public Awareness Chair in 2021-22, winning numerous awards for his stellar contributions. During the COVID-19 pandemic, his relentless efforts to aid those in need earned him the title of “Best COVID Warrior” by the Government of Odisha, an honour bestowed by former Health Minister Naba Kishore Das.
Impactful Initiatives
DG Yagyansis is deeply invested in Rotary’s initiatives. From environmental conservation to improving literacy and healthcare, his work spans a wide array of social issues. One standout project is the Rotary Employment Initiative, which empowers underprivileged individuals, including those physically challenged, by providing financial support to establish small businesses. “Rotary’s message is simple,” he says, “You can, and with a little support, you will.”
Under his leadership, Rotary is also addressing pressing issues in rural areas like Malkangiri and Nagada. His focus remains on creating awareness around malaria and dengue, ensuring clean water resources, and improving sanitation facilities.
A Personal Philosophy Rooted in Values
At the core of Yagyansis’ life philosophy is the belief that “being a good human being comes first, and your karma creates your destiny.” He advocates for self-reliance and simplicity, drawing inspiration from Mahatma Gandhi’s principles of Atmanirbhar Bharat. He often emphasizes the importance of embracing modernity while staying rooted in cultural traditions, urging the younger generation to shun addictions and embrace yoga and meditation.
A Vision for the Future
As District Governor for Rotary International’s District 3262 (2024-25), Yagyansis has ambitious goals. He envisions an empowered society where individuals thrive with dignity, education reaches every corner of the country, and environmental conservation becomes second nature. Through large-scale tree-planting drives, free eye check-ups, and community-building initiatives, his leadership promises impactful changes.
A Family of Support
Behind every great leader is a strong support system, and Yagyansis is no exception. His wife, Rtn. Itun Mohapatra, stands by his side as an ardent Rotarian, while his daughters, Akankshya and Rockshnnada, are pursuing their education with the same values of hard work and service.
