In an effort to get justice for the rape and murder victim at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in West Bengal, medical professionals at the top medical school in the country, AIIMS-Delhi, will stage a demonstration on Saturday afternoon in the nation’s capital. Dr. Suvrankar Datta, a senior resident physician at AIIMS-New Delhi and vice president of the Federation of All India Medical Associations (FAIMA), informed the media that they were organizing a nonviolent demonstration.
“We are organising a large peaceful protest at Jantar Mantar on August 31 to seek justice for our colleague at RG Kar Medical College in West Bengal. We call on the Central Government to implement a nationwide protection Act for healthcare professionals to prevent violence. Ahead of the Supreme Court hearing on September 5, I urge doctors to join us at Jantar Mantar from 3 P.M. to 5 P.M. on Saturday. We want to demonstrate our unity and demand increased security in hospitals across the country” Dr Suvrankar Datta was quoted as saying by media reports.
Following several instances of physical and sexual attack on healthcare workers, especially against women while they are on duty, the nation’s medical community is requesting that the Union government enact a national healthcare professionals protection Act to shield them from violence. The physicians have called on other members of the medical community to join them in protesting the government’s disregard for their predicament and demanding justice for the RG Kar victim. They want to assemble at Jantar Mantar.
