T.T.V. Dhinakaran, the founder leader of the AMMK and the NDA candidate for the Theni Lok Sabha constituency in Tamil Nadu, requested on Tuesday that the Election Commission take appropriate action to ensure the security of EVMs.
Dhinakaran mentioned media reports about the arrest of a former employee of an engineering college in the Theni district for attempting to enter the location used to keep EVMs in a social media post. Concerning the two distinct events in the regions of Erode and The Nilgiris when CCTV coverage of strong rooms was interrupted, he also voiced his concerns.
In addition, the AMMK leader requested that strong rooms—where EVMs are kept until counting day—be under constant CCTV surveillance. Additionally, he said that the attempted admission of a person into the campus under the protection of state and Central police officers, as well as technical problems that resulted in a break in CCTV coverage, had raised “suspicions” among the public. On April 19, Tamil Nadu hosted polling for the first phase of the Lok Sabha elections. Voter tallying is scheduled for June 4.
