Andrew Tate, a controversial online influencer and self-described misogynist, has been jailed in Romania on suspicion of human trafficking, rape, and organising a criminal organisation, according to officials. Prior to being banned from social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter as well as YouTube for misogynistic remarks and hate speech, Tate, a former kickboxer and reality TV star, topped Google searches earlier this year. He was arrested along with his brother and two other suspects.
He got into a spat this week with environmentalist Greta Thunberg, boasting about his collection of supercars and requesting Thunberg’s email address so he could “provide a detailed list of my car collection and their corresponding tremendous emissions.” In a tweet that is currently among the most loved in history, Thunberg responded, writing: “Yes, enlighten me, please. contact me by email at smalld***energy@getalife.com.” According to accounts, the authorities were able to find him thanks to a video he posted about Greta Thunberg when they were having an online argument. The pizza box in the footage provided the authorities with a hint.
Later today, Greta responded to his arrest with a mocking tweet that read, “This is what happens when you don’t recycle your pizza boxes.”Two British and two Romanian citizens were suspected of belonging to a criminal organisation that specialised in human trafficking, according to a statement from Romania’s Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT), which did not mention the Tate brothers by name.
In a video of the raid that was also made public, you can see cash, weapons, and knives on display in one area.
