In connection with a ten-year-old sexual assault case, a local court in Gujarat’s Gandhinagar on Tuesday, January 31, sentenced self-described godman Asaram to life in jail. In a case of rape brought against Asaram, the prosecution informed the sessions court earlier today that he is a “habitual offender” and is requesting life in prison and a sizable punishment.Further Sessions The “godman” who was previously venerated by the populace and a large number of politicians in Gujarat and elsewhere was given life in jail by Judge D K Soni.
According to Asaram’s attorney, the Gujarat High Court will hear an appeal of the session court’s decision. Notably, Asaram’s son Narayan Sai sexually assaulted and forcibly imprisoned the victim’s younger sister. In the rape case brought by his former disciple against him in 2013, Sai was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison by a sessions court in Surat in April 2019. According to the FIR (First Information Report) against Asaram Bapu and six others that was filed at the Chandkheda police station in Ahmedabad on October 6, 2013, the self-styled godman had raped the woman disciple, who was from Surat, on numerous occasions between 2001 and 2006 while she was living at his ashram at Motera close to Ahmedabad. Fortunately, she was able to flee.
In July 2014, a chargesheet was submitted. Soni had already convicted him guilty of rape under section 376(2)C), unnatural sex under section 377, and illegal imprisonment under section 346, among other offences. The prosecution called 55 witnesses, and the court accepted their testimony. The prosecution wanted the worst punishment during the hearing to determine the sentence’s length.
