Auditions for Dhanu Yatra roles kick-off

On Monday, auditions for the 75th edition of Dhanu Yatra began at Biju Patnaik Town Hall in Bargarh for the selection of artistes to play various roles in the open-air theatre festival.

SAMBALPUR: On Monday, auditions for the 75th edition of Dhanu Yatra began at Biju Patnaik Town Hall in Bargarh for the selection of artistes to play various roles in the open-air theatre festival.

The audition will be held until November 10th. According to sources, at least 223 applications were received this year for 11 different Dhanu Yatra roles. There are 60 applications for the role of King Kansa.

 

On the first day, auditions for the roles of Ugrasen, Basudev, Devaki, Narada, and Senapati were held. While six people auditioned for the role of Ugrasen, 14 people auditioned for the role of Basudev. Similarly, four people auditioned for the role of Devaki, 24 for Senapati, and seven for the role of Narad.

 

A seven-member expert team auditioned the actors, which included theatre directors Dr Pradip Majhi of Kalahandi and Jamal Khan of Balangir, as well as playwright and director Brajendra Nayak of Sambalpur, theatre actor-cum-director Hemanta Mohapatra of Deogarh, film director Litu Mohanty of Bargarh, actor, director, and writer Siblala Sagar of Bijepur, and writer and director Ashok Bohidar of

 

The Dhanu Yatra will be held after a two-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The festival will take place this year from December 27 to January 6. During the yatra, the entire town of Bargarh will be transformed into a stage. While the town becomes Mathura under the rule of the demon king Kansa, Lord Krishna’s ‘Balya Leela’ will take place on the other side of the Jeera river at Ambapali (Gopapura).
