Beyond Steel and Mines: ND Rao’s Vision for a Sustainable Odisha.

FEATURE: In the industrial corridors of Odisha, where steel meets ambition and mining paves the way for progress, one name echoes as a symbol of visionary leadership and transformative change—ND Rao. With a career spanning over four decades, Rao has been the driving force behind some of the state’s most iconic projects, leaving an enduring mark on its industrial landscape.

Born and raised in Visakhapatnam, Rao’s deep connection with Odisha wasn’t born out of mere professional obligations—it evolved into a passion that transcended the boundaries of his career. His reverence for the state is rooted in his admiration for its rich culture and untapped potential. “Lord Jagannath has already blessed this land. The rest is up to us—to contribute efficiently and meaningfully,” Rao says, encapsulating the deep sense of purpose that has guided his journey.

Rao’s journey through India’s industrial sector is nothing short of inspiring. One of the most defining experiences of his career was his association with Ratan Tata during his tenure at Tata Steel. Reflecting on this pivotal time, Rao says, “The first-ever steel production in India started with Tata Steel. Likewise, India’s automobile production began with Telco—now Tata Motors.” These early experiences honed Rao’s understanding of industrial excellence and shaped his approach to leadership, innovation, and corporate responsibility.

While Rao’s contributions to the steel and mining sectors are remarkable, it is his deep commitment to corporate social responsibility (CSR) that sets him apart. During his leadership at Jindal Steel, Deojhar, Rao observed the unintended consequences of industrial development—children from mining-affected areas being deprived of education.

Rather than turning a blind eye, Rao initiated a transformative CSR program. The initiative provided affected children with school buses, uniforms, and books, restoring their lost educational opportunities. “We didn’t just give them a fresh start; we helped nurture future leaders of this country,” Rao humbly reflects.

Also he had started from providing 365 days Rice requirements & Medicines requirements from Jindal Steel to Barbil Adivasi School Students Hostel of Padmashri Tulsi Appa. Also JSPL’s Medical Doctor visit to this Hostel every Sunday in a Week with free Medication. All Free Services to this Adivasi Children. Thank you & Regards

This initiative wasn’t just about charity—it was about creating lasting change and setting an example for the entire industry. It demonstrated how industrial progress could coexist with compassion and social responsibility.

Rao’s deep understanding of the socio-economic impact of industrial development led him to focus on another often-overlooked group: land losers—people displaced due to industrial land acquisition. For Rao, providing them with jobs wasn’t just a business requirement but a moral responsibility.

“When we acquire land, our priority should be to offer employment to those who once called that land their own,” he asserts. Acknowledging the challenges posed by limited education among these communities, Rao took a proactive approach by collaborating with a renowned Industrial Training Institute (ITI) to set up a technical workshop in Joda. The program trained locals in crane operations and machinery handling, providing them with valuable skills and sustainable employment opportunities.

Rao’s passion for nurturing the next generation of leaders goes beyond his corporate ventures. His tenure as the President of the All India Pellet Manufacturers Association (2014–2018) and his roles as a Visiting Professor at IIT Bhubaneswar (2018–2020) and IMMT Bhubaneswar reflect his dedication to knowledge-sharing and mentorship.

He firmly believes that true industrial progress is incomplete without a parallel investment in human resources. “We often focus on what lies beneath the soil—iron ore, bauxite, oil. But what about the resources above the soil? Human talent, environmental wealth, and innovation—these are the real assets of Odisha’s future,” Rao emphasizes.

Rao’s legacy is also deeply intertwined with his commitment to sustainability. Throughout his career, he has led initiatives focused on reducing carbon footprints, conserving water, and promoting the use of renewable energy in industrial operations. His efforts toward establishing schools, hospitals, and vocational training centres have empowered marginalized communities, ensuring that the benefits of industrialization extend beyond profit margins.

His holistic vision for industrial growth serves as a blueprint for balancing economic development with environmental responsibility and community welfare.

As a respected thought leader and industry stalwart, Rao’s perspective on Odisha’s future as an industrial hub is both optimistic and pragmatic. He believes the state’s rich natural resources, when coupled with its vast human potential, can elevate Odisha to a position of national and global prominence.

“If we channel our focus on both natural resources and human resources, Odisha will not just be India’s industrial heartland but a beacon for the global economy,” he predicts.

ND Rao’s incredible journey stands as a testament to the power of visionary leadership, compassion, and relentless dedication. From pioneering advancements in steel and mining to championing CSR initiatives that transform lives, Rao’s impact on Odisha’s industrial and social landscape is unparalleled.

His story is more than a narrative of corporate success—it’s about using industry as a force for good, ensuring that progress reaches every corner of society. As young entrepreneurs and professionals look to the future, Rao’s life remains a guiding light, proving that true leadership is not just about building industries but also about building lives and communities.

In a world driven by rapid industrialization, ND Rao serves as a reminder that progress and compassion can—and should—go hand in hand. His legacy will undoubtedly inspire future generations, leaving an indelible mark on Odisha’s journey toward sustainable growth and prosperity.
