Bhadrak Launches Initiative To Secure GI Tag For ‘Palua Ladu’

The district government of Bhadrak has started a determined attempt to get “Palua Ladu,” a popular traditional sweetmeat praised for its distinct flavor and handcrafted artistry, a Geographical Indication (GI) designation. This project seeks to uplift Bhadrak’s reputation internationally while preserving the sweet’s cultural legacy. Emphasizing the cultural value of “Palua Ladu,” Bhadrak Collector Dilip Routrai has instructed all department heads, tehsildars, and block development officials to include it in hospitality packets for official meetings and celebrations.

According to Routrai, obtaining the GI tag will provide Bhadrak a unique identity in addition to safeguarding the historical tradition of “Palua Ladu.” By highlighting the abilities of Bhadrak’s confectioners and presenting Odisha’s rich culinary legacy globally, he said the accolade will strengthen the local economy. “Palua Ladu,” which is well-known for its rich flavor, is made using age-old techniques and traditional ingredients including sugar, semolina, and arrowroot powder (palua). In order to gather the historical and technical records required for the GI tag application, the district government is working with regional confectioners and cultural institutions.

If successful, “Palua Ladu” would be added to the esteemed GI-tagged list among other Odisha delicacies like “Rasagola” and “Kandhamal Haldi,” solidifying the state’s rich cultural heritage.
