Bhubaneswar minor domestic workers rescued, one detained

Childline volunteers on Sunday rescued a young girl from a home in the Bankers’ Enclave Colony, a neighbourhood in Bhubaneswar’s Palasuni district that is under the jurisdiction of the Mancheswar police. The girl was allegedly used as a domestic helper and tortured.

The police opened an investigation and recorded a case based on the allegation made by Childline. The young woman was apparently employed by Ashok Kumar Swain and Manini Anuradha Biswal.Ajay Kumar Swain, the father of Ashok, allegedly met with the victim’s family three years ago, according to a source. Since the victim’s family’s financial situation was precarious, her father asked Ajay for some financial assistance. Ajay took advantage of their predicament and suggested taking her with him, to which her father consented. Her father received some money from Ajay. She worked for Ashok’s household. She apparently suffered torture there even for a small offence. She received threats to keep what was happening to her a secret. She also wanted to remain silent because of the circumstances surrounding her family.

Childline and the Mancheswar police carried out a raid at Ashok’s home with the assistance of Childline after learning of the girl’s sufferings from a reliable source, and the girl was saved. Officials brought her to Capital Hospital as soon as they saw bruises and signs of hot branding. She was then brought to a shelter residence at Kalinga Vihar. The police have taken one into custody and begun an investigation after filing a case.
