The tuk-tuk vehicle, also known as a “auto-ricksaw” in desi slang, is a popular kind of public transportation on Indian highways and is currently gaining favour in the UK. The BBC reports that a Welsh police force has said it will utilise a fleet of three-wheelers to fight crime.
The tuk-tuks will be used by officers and ambassadors in Newport and Abergavenny “day and night” to patrol parks, sidewalks, and other public areas, according to the Welsh police. The vehicles are only allowed to go at a maximum speed of 55 kilometres per hour.
These tuk-tuks will serve as “safe spaces,” according to police authorities, where crimes can be reported, assistance can be obtained, and tips on crime prevention can be given. However, the move to ban tuk-tuks has not been without its detractors, with some criticising the ‘ineffective’ use of tax dollars.
Parents applauded the decision because they believe it will help protect young people, especially ladies, who are out late at night; police reported that the response to the vehicles had been overwhelmingly positive.
