In the sensational 1999 Odisha gang rape case, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) finally filed a supplementary charge sheet in the Court of Special Chief Judicial Magistrate, Bhubaneswar(Odisha) against the prime accused, Bibekananda alias Biban Biswal.
According to the official report, on March 5, 1999, the CBI registered a case and on the matter of Orissa High Court which was issued on February 26, 1999. Later the Central Agency had taken over the case from Mahila Police, Cuttack which had registered an FIR in this gang-rape case on January 10, 1999.
The report further stated that according to the CBI statement after the investigation a charge sheet was filed by the CBI against the two accused – Pradeep Kumar Sahoo and Dhirendra Mohanty on May 5, 1999. Both the accused were sentenced to undergo Life Imprisonment in April 2002 by the Designated Court, Bhubaneswar.
The report further added that the third and allegedly prime accused in the case- Biban was absconding but he was arrested by the Commissionerate of Police on February 22, 2021, and sent to Judicial Custody by the Court.
After further investigation, the CBI finally filed a supplementary charge sheet in the court of Special CJM, Bhubaneswar.
