CCI imposes Rs 1,337 cr fine on Google for anti-market practices

FIR Against Google CEO Sundar Pichai For Copyright Infringement

In addition to issuing a cease-and-desist order against the tech giant, the Competition Commission of India (CCI) fined Google Rs 1,337.76 crore for abusing its dominant position in a number of areas within the Android mobile device ecosystem. Google has been granted 30 days to provide the necessary financial information and supporting documentation.

According to the sources, Google was also instructed not to provide any incentives to smartphone manufacturers to only carry its search services by the antitrust agency, which began looking into Google some years ago after receiving complaints from domestic competitors. The Commission looked into Google’s licensing policies for the Android mobile operating system and many of its proprietary mobile apps (Play Store, Google Search, Google Chrome, YouTube, etc).

“In relation to understanding the extent of competition between Google’s Android ecosystem and Apple’s iOS ecosystem, the Commission noted the differences in the two business models which affect the underlying incentives of business decisions,” the CCI said in a statement.

The core of Apple’s business is a vertically integrated smart device ecosystem that prioritizes the selling of high-end smart devices with cutting-edge software. In contrast, it was discovered that Google’s business was primarily motivated by the desire to attract more users to its platforms so that they would engage with its revenue-generating service, namely online search, which has a direct impact on the company’s ability to sell online advertising services.
