According to a Bloomberg study, this outbreak is currently the biggest in history with 37 million cases reported daily. The virus likely infected 248 million individuals in the first 20 days of December, or nearly 18% of the population, according to estimates made during a meeting of China’s National Health Commission. It would also surpass the previous daily record of roughly 4 million, established in January 2022, provided the calculation is accurate.
China, the last big nation to move toward accepting the virus, started dismantling its “zero-COVID” regime of lockdowns and testing this month in the face of a swelling outbreak and loud protests.Global supply lines and trade were clogged as a result of its containment measures, which had caused the economy to grow at its slowest rate in close to 50 years. More disruption is anticipated in the short term before the economy recovers later in the year as Chinese workers become sick more frequently.
