“Combatant Cop”

Umashankar Dash, DCP-Bhubaneswar

Soon after taking charge as the Deputy Commissioner of Police of Bhubaneswar Urban District, Uma Shankar Dash, a 2008 batch IPS officer has vindicated the faith of the powers that be.

Dash, previously the SP of Puri had demonstrated exemplary gumption and courage when the colossal cyclonic storm Fani struck Puri’s coast in May 2019. More recently, the top cop ensured smooth and seamless staging of the Rath Yatra sans any law and order hiccups.

In his latest incarnate, Dash has shown his no-holds-barred approach. He cracked down on Sub Inspector Sanjay Jena for dereliction of duty during Covid. Jena has been showcaused to respond to the DCP’s notice, clarifying the reasons for his negligence.

The DCP has segued into the action mode with alacrity and this is the buzz in the corridors of power. The state’s IPS fraternity, too, is stunned by his daredevilry.

Tough he may be but equally, concerned Dash is on the safety and well being of the police personnel.

“In this time of the pandemic, the safety of the police personnel is very important. We are following all the safety protocols like social distance, wearing of masks and sanitisation among others. Out workplaces are being sanitised regularly. Our staffers are getting tested in large numbers. Sufficient PPE kits have been provided to all the personnel. The internal awareness campaign is being taken up to prevent them from getting infected”, Dash said.

“Now, our priority is containing Covid as it is an immediate threat to people’s lives. However, we are also emphasising on our core functioning and making efforts so that it is not significantly affected”, he added.

Covid aside, Dash is wary of the drug menace and the threat it poses to the society a large and the vulnerable youths in particular. Some serious crimes of other hues are linked to drug abuse.

Dash, an upright officer with unquestionable credentials, is also committed to speeding up the disposal of a backlog of cases at police stations.
