Commonwealth Games Day 7: Sreeshankar bags historic silver in long jump

Murali Sreeshankar earned silver in the men’s long jump at the ongoing 2022 Commonwealth Games with a personal best of 8.08 m.

Laquan Nairn of the Bahamas won the gold medal. Nairn also had the best jump of 8.08m, but his second best performance of 7.98m which was better than Sreeshankar’s 7.84m. According to the rules, if two jumpers are at the same distance, the jumper with the second best performance is placed in front.

South Africa’s Jovan van Vuuren (8.06 m) won the bronze medal. Another Indian, Muhammad Anise Yahiya, finished fifth with a personal best of 7.97m.

Sreeshankar’s silver medal was the highest among Indian men’s long jumpers in the CWG. Suresh Babu won his 1978 bronze medal. In the women’s division, Prajusha Mariakal won silver in her 2010 Delhi Games and legendary Anju Bobby George bagged her bronze in 2002.
