“Over 75,000 students are currently studying civil engineering, 65,000 in electrical engineering, 135,000 in electronic and computer engineering, and 95,000 in mechanical engineering across India. This is beneficial for the country, according to TG Sitharam, chairperson of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), who spoke on Saturday.

He noted, ‘Currently, around six lakh students are enrolled in computer-based courses due to market demands. However, in the next 2-3 years, core engineering combined with emerging technologies will gain popularity, as these new areas are crucial for everyone.’ Sitharam made these remarks during the 22nd graduation ceremony at Krishna College of Engineering and Technology in Coimbatore.”

Speaking to reporters, Sitharam highlighted that achieving a 50% Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) at the national level by 2035 is a significant challenge. The AICTE is focused on equipping students with the skills necessary for employability and has initiated the creation of portals for placements, careers, and internships to support this goal. He also congratulated Tamil Nadu for already reaching a 50% GER in higher education.“Currently, 4.3 crore children are enrolled in higher education across 45,000 colleges and 1,200 universities in the country. We aim to reach a 50% Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) by 2035, and we have achieved 28.3% so far at the national level. With four crore more students expected to pursue higher education in the next decade, there will be a need for new universities and colleges to meet this demand. Achieving a 22% increase in GER over the next 11 years will be a significant challenge,” he stated.
