A controversy surrounding an animal shelter under construction in Nizampur, on the outskirts of Delhi, has prompted administrative action and renewed attention to the challenges faced by animal-welfare organisations.
According to The Indian Express, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi suspended a junior engineer after an inquiry was ordered into the alleged demolition of the facility. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta also met animal-welfare activist Jagriti Mishra and assured her of ₹5 lakh in assistance from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.
What led to the controversy?
Mishra, who runs Street World Trust and works with injured and sick animals, alleged in a viral video that the animal shelter under construction had been demolished without prior notice.
She also alleged that the action followed her refusal to pay individuals connected to local political circles. These claims remain allegations and should not be treated as established findings.
The activist reportedly said she had invested approximately ₹70 lakh in the project using personal funds and donations.
Government response and administrative action
Following the controversy, an inquiry was ordered and a junior engineer was suspended. The suspension order, as described in the report, indicated that disciplinary proceedings were contemplated but did not fully explain the circumstances of the demolition.
The chief minister also directed the district magistrate to assist Mishra in establishing the shelter and promised ₹5 lakh in financial support.
The matter has attracted attention because animal shelters can provide essential care for abandoned, injured and sick animals, particularly in urban areas where access to treatment and safe accommodation can be limited.
Questions that remain unanswered
Several details still require clarification, including the circumstances under which the structure was demolished, the applicable permissions and the findings of the inquiry. The allegations involving demands for money also require independent verification.
The controversy highlights the importance of transparent administrative procedures and clear communication between civic authorities and organisations working for public welfare.
