Dhenkanal – As Dhenkanal Assembly Constituency will go to polls on May 25, political fervor is reaching its peak. Major parties have launched their campaigns in full swing, and the contest for this prestigious seat promises to be engrossing.
This election there are eight candidates in the fray from Dhenkanal Assembly seat. While both BJD and BJP have repeated their 2019 election candidates for this seat, Congress has fielded debutant Sushmita Singhdeo, kin of former Union Minister Kamakshya Prasad Singhdeo, a member of the Dhenkanal Royal Family and kin of former Union Minister KP Singhdeo.
Meanwhile, Aam Aadmi Party has nominated Bharat Kumar Das, who is associated with various social organizations in Dhenkanal.
Amidst electioneering, candidates from the major parties are seen ramping up their campaigning as only a few days left for the polls. Candidates are seen conducting bike rallies, door-to-door canvassing, public meetings, street corner gatherings, star campaigner campaigning to garner votes to their respective sides.
BJD nominee Sudhir Samal won this seat back in 2019, with a thumping victory, while BJP’s nominee Krushna Chandra was the runner-up during the 2019 elections.
Local political pundits and analysts here believe that this time Dhenkanal Assembly seat is witnessing a big gripping poll fight between BJD’s Sudhir Samal and BJP’s Krushna Chandra Patra. Both Sudhir and Krushna are seasoned politicians and former MLA’s. Sudhir was elected from this seat for two terms, in 2004 with a Congress ticket and in 2019 from BJD, while Krushna Chandra Patra was elected as the MLA in 2000.
In 2019, BJD’s Sudhir Kumar Samal got 89,536 votes and emerged victoriously defeating his close contender Krushna Chandra Patra with a margin of 20,640 votes. Patra got 68,896 votes during 2019 election.
However, this time Krushna Chandra Patra has an advantage over others since many prominent leaders of BJD and Congress from the district have resigned and joined the BJP.
Some of the big names who recently joined the BJP are Harshavardhan Singhdeo, who had served BJD as State Secretary (Regional Development), Akshaya Mohanty (former President of Odisha State Cooperative Bank Ltd.), KD Sahoo (Ex Zilla Parishad Vice-President), Nabin Chandra Narayan Das (former Minister) Suresh Panigrahy (former District Congress President), and many more. The joining of such experienced and veteran leaders have further strengthened the BJP here.
In 2009, NCP nominee Nabin Nanda got elected from this seat, in 2014 the seat was held by BJD candidate Saroj Kumar Samal and in 2019, BJD candidate Sudhir Kumar Samal had won this seat.
