The business Colossal intends to revive an increasing number of extinct animals through genetic engineering. The goal of reviving the woolly mammoth was what gave life to the real-world versions of Jurassic Park in 2021, and it’s now closer than ever! The organisation, which has headquarters in Boston, Dallas, and Austin, Texas, announced in August 2022 that it also intended to eradicate the Australian thylacine, also known as the Tasmanian tiger. This new initiative, which was unveiled on Tuesday, would save a species that has historically been used to illustrate how people may cause an animal species to go extinct.
From around 300,000 years ago until about 10,000 years ago, woolly mammoths inhabited the icy tundra of Europe, Asia, and North America. All of the information we have about them comes from fossils, skeletal remains, and frozen specimens that researchers and archaeologists have uncovered in various locations across the world. They were among the last of several mammoth species that went back to the early Pliocene and included Mammuthus subplanifrons. The males were about the size of African elephants, with shoulder heights ranging from 2.7 to 3.4 metres. They allegedly coexisted with early humans, who fashioned tools, artwork, and habitations from of their bones and tusks.
Reviving the animal could have a positive effect on the health of the global environment because, according to Colossal, the woolly mammoth’s extensive travel patterns actively contribute to maintaining the health of the Arctic. Given the global political climate today, Colossal may look into other options in place of its initial plan to return woolly mammoths to Siberia. If Colossal is successful in reviving the woolly mammoth and the thylacine, often known as the Tasmanian tiger, a number of new ethical concerns about how to treat the animal and future repatriation problems will likely arise.
