Two separate tragedies struck eastern India on Monday, killing at least 16 people and injuring many others. Seven devotees died in a stampede-like incident at Ashok Dham Temple in Lakhisarai, Bihar, while the death toll from a pre-dawn hotel fire in Tarapith, West Bengal, rose to at least nine, according to the latest reports available tonight.

🔴 Bihar: Seven devotees killed at Ashok Dham Temple

The first tragedy unfolded in Lakhisarai district, Bihar, early Monday morning at the Ashok Dham Temple during the third Monday of the holy Sawan month.

The temple had attracted a huge number of devotees who had gathered to offer water to Lord Shiva. Authorities said the crowd became exceptionally large, with two trains arriving at the nearby Ashok Dham halt around 6:30–6:45 a.m., adding significantly to the number of people in the area.

A sudden panic reportedly broke out after an electric pole/cable fell or was believed to have fallen, with rumours spreading that a live wire had reached the crowd. The panic triggered a stampede-like crush. Officials have stressed that the precise sequence and cause are still being investigated.

Seven women devotees were confirmed dead, while more than a dozen others were injured. Later reports from the district administration put the number of injured at 25.

Rescue operations and compensation announced

Police, district officials and medical teams rushed to the scene as injured devotees were transported to hospitals. Visuals published today showed ambulances and medical teams assisting victims and relatives outside the hospital.

Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary expressed grief over the deaths and announced ₹4 lakh ex-gratia compensation for the family of each deceased devotee. An inquiry has also been ordered into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The incident has also triggered questions over crowd management, particularly because the temple was experiencing an unusually heavy rush on a major religious day.

🔥 West Bengal: Hotel fire kills pilgrims in Tarapith

Later, another tragedy struck Tarapith in Birbhum district, West Bengal, one of eastern India’s major pilgrimage destinations.

A major fire broke out at Hotel Bideshini at around 4:30–5 a.m., when most guests were asleep. The blaze reportedly began on the lower floor of the multi-storey hotel and smoke rapidly spread through the building.

Death toll rises as investigation continues

The number of confirmed deaths has been changing as hospitals receive and assess victims. The latest report available tonight puts the death toll at nine, although earlier reports throughout the day gave lower figures.

Several others were injured and taken to Rampurhat Government Medical College and Hospital, with some reported to be in critical condition.

One of the most tragic aspects of the incident was the death of members of a family from Meghalaya. NDTV reported that five members of the family, including two children, were among those who died.

Possible short circuit and questions over fire safety

A short circuit is being investigated as the preliminary cause of the fire. Authorities are also examining whether the hotel complied with required fire-safety regulations.

According to the Birbhum police, 43 people were rescued from the hotel, while several people required hospital treatment. Investigators are particularly looking into reports that a rear exit was locked and that access to the rooftop was blocked, potentially making evacuation more difficult.

Police have taken action against the hotel management while the investigation into the fire and alleged safety violations continues.

⚠️ Two tragedies, one major safety concern

Although the Bihar stampede and Bengal hotel fire were unrelated incidents, both have raised questions about public safety at major pilgrimage destinations.

In Bihar, the sudden surge of devotees and panic around an electrical incident overwhelmed the crowd-management arrangements. In Tarapith, investigators are examining whether inadequate fire-safety provisions contributed to the loss of life.

Both locations were dealing with large numbers of pilgrims during the Sawan/Shiv-related pilgrimage period, when religious sites across eastern India see exceptionally high footfall.

The incidents have once again highlighted the importance of effective crowd-control systems, emergency exits, fire-safety compliance, evacuation planning and rapid emergency response at pilgrimage centres.
