ED Files Chargesheet Against Sheikh Shahjahan

On Monday, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) filed a chargesheet against Sheikh Shahjahan, the former leader of the Trinamool Congress, who is believed to have been the mastermind behind the attack on an ED team and CAPF officers outside his West Bengal residence earlier this year. When officials from the probe agency raided Shahjahan’s home in Sandeshkhali, in the North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, they attacked the ED and the CAPF personnel.

The Enforcement Department (ED) has accused Shahjahan of obtaining Rs 261 crore through unlawful land grabbing in Sandeshkhali, according to the chargesheet submitted to a Special PMLA in Kolkata. On Monday, an ED attorney told the court that 180 bighas (59.5 acres) of land that Shahjahan had unlawfully taken at Sandeshkhali have been identified by central agency officials thus far. The chargesheet names Shahjahan as an accused along with his brother Sheikh Alamgir and his close accomplices Siboprasad Hazra and Didar Bux Molla.

Shahajahan’s possessions and assets totaling Rs 27 crore have already been seized by the ED. It has been discovered that the chargesheet submitted on Monday includes information about the assets and property that the ED’s officials attached. According to people with knowledge of the development, Shahjahan’s chances of being granted bail in this case are virtually nonexistent due to the way the chargesheet, which was submitted on Monday, was written.
