In an interaction with Dr. Ghanashyam Biswas opens up about his path to becoming an oncologist, the inspiration behind his hospital’s inception, and his approach to addressing the multifaceted challenges of cancer treatment.

Could you share the beginnings of your journey in becoming an oncologist?

Certainly My journey into oncology was ignited by a blend of personal aspirations and family inspiration. My maternal grandfather’s wish for me to become a doctor combined with the influence of my uncle and elder cousins, who were already in the medical field, set me on this path. From there, completing my MBBS at SCB College laid the foundation for my medical career. The year 1999 Super Cyclone time while doing my Medicine post graduate in MKCG college sparked my passion for specialized medical fields like gastroenterology and oncology.

How did your interest in oncology evolve over time?

My interest in oncology deepened as I worked alongside few prominent oncologists in Delhi. Although my initial focus was on fundamental medical issues, my involvement with oncology patients gradually drew me closer to the field. I pursued specialization, competing for limited seats at tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai under renowned oncologist Dr SH Advani. The landscape of oncology in India underwent a transformation, with the number of medical oncology doctors rising significantly over the years. Here in Odisha also there has been a great evolution in health infrastructure and skilled resources along with technology.

What motivated you to establish a cancer treatment hospital in Odisha?

The turning point came during my short fellowship program at MD Anderson Medical Centre in Houston, Texas. Witnessing their relentless dedication to cancer research and treatment inspired me to contribute similarly in my mother land Odisha. This led to the inception of Sparsh in 2007, where we aimed to bridge the gap in cancer treatment in this region. With support from my family and friends, the hospital began its journey to provide effective and compassionate cancer care.

How do you address the financial challenges that come with cancer treatment?

Financial barriers are a substantial concern for cancer patients. Initiatives like BSKY have been pivotal in offering financial support to patients. As awareness grows and government efforts gain momentum, more patients are seeking the treatment they need. Additionally, at Sparsh, we focus on providing options for patients who lack resources, including the opportunity to participate actively in clinical trials. Lots came from teachings, contributions and cooperations from my mentors Dr Purvish Parikh, Dr Reena Nair, Dr Sripad Banavali, Dr Sudeep Gupta and Dr Sauren Das. We cleared Indian FDA inspection few years back and now US FDA too with a note of good ethics and data keeping.

How do you approach the physical and emotional challenges faced by cancer patients?

Collaboration with experts like Dr. Purna Kurkure, my Guru and Guide led us to propose and plan the After Cancer Treatment (ACT) clinic soon in Odisha. This clinic is designed to support patients who have completed their cancer treatment but still grapple with emotional and other challenges. Our goal is to offer comprehensive care that addresses the holistic well-being of patients, ensuring their quality of life beyond the medical aspects.

Dr. Ghanashyam Biswas’ journey in oncology is a testament to his unyielding dedication, compassion, and the pursuit of excellence. His impact reverberates not only within the walls of Sparsh Hospital but also throughout the healthcare landscape of Odisha. Through his relentless efforts, patients receive not only cutting-edge medical treatment but also a healing touch that fosters hope and empowerment. Dr. Biswas’ story exemplifies how one individual’s commitment can transform an entire community’s approach to cancer care. His life has been full circle from being a student in oncology to having four oncology students per year under his guidance.
