Dr. Manmohan Singh, a seasoned Congress lawmaker and former prime minister, died Thursday evening at Delhi’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). He was ninety-two. His condition worsened earlier in the evening, and he was brought to the emergency room. From 2004 until 2014, he was India’s prime minister for two terms in a row. A prominent economist and political figure in India, he served in the Upper House since 1991 before retiring as a Rajya Sabha MP in April 2024.
Widely regarded as the architect of India’s economic liberalization, Dr. Singh played a pivotal role in shaping the nation’s economic policies during his tenure as Finance Minister under the P.V. Narasimha Rao government from 1991 to 1996. In addition to his tenure as Prime Minister, Dr. Singh also served as the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha from 1998 to 2004. His profound contributions to Indian politics and economics have left an indelible mark on the nation’s history. His tenure is often credited for initiating major economic reforms in 1991 when he was the Finance Minister, which helped modernise India’s economy and integrate it into the global market.

Rising from humble origins, he rose to become a respected economist. He served in various government positions as well, including as Finance Minister, leaving a strong imprint on our economic policy over the years. His interventions in Parliament were also insightful. As our Prime Minister, he made extensive efforts to improve people’s lives.”

He was respected all over the world for his knowledge and skills in the field of economics. As the Finance Minister, Singh gave a new direction to the country’s economy. Due to his liberal economic policies, India started its journey as a major economy in the world. As the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh accelerated the development of the country in various fields, said the Chief Minister, the Chief Minister wrote.
