The ‘decoration’ of terrorist Yakub Memon’s grave in Mumbai with LED lights, gleaming white marble, and green paint caused a huge uproar. In the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case, which resulted in more than 200 fatalities, Memon received a death sentence. Yakub Memon died in 2015 and was laid to rest at Bada Kabristan in Marine Lines, Mumbai.
On Thursday, Mumbai police reacted quickly and took down the LED lights that had been placed at Memon’s grave after they saw how widely shared photos and videos of his grave were on social media. Halogen lights were allegedly installed in the Bada Kabrastan to celebrate Badi Raat, according to the police (Shab-e-Barat). According to PTI, it has been taken down by Kabrastan trustees.
The marble tiles at the grave, which also contains the remains of 13 additional Memon family members, were installed three years ago, according to the police. Meanwhile, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced that an inquiry has been ordered and an investigation is underway, adding that action will be taken against those involved, according to ANI.
“When Uddhav Thackeray was the CM, the grave of terrorist Yakub Memon, who carried out the 1993 Bombay bombings at Pakistan’s command, was turned into a Mazar. Is he displaying patriotism or love for Mumbai? Ram Kadam, a BJP lawmaker, demanded an apology from Thackeray for the incident. Additionally, he requested an apology from the Congress’ Uddhav Thackeray, Sharad Pawar, and Rahul Gandhi.
Memon was the only prisoner executed in the 1993 Mumbai serial explosions case. A series of bombings that occurred in Mumbai (then Bombay) on March 12, 1993, resulted in 257 fatalities, over 700 injuries, and the destruction of property worth over Rs 27 crore. The matter was given to the Central Bureau of Investigation at the request of the state administration (CBI).Mustafa Dossa and Abu Salem were two of the defendants found guilty in the case on June 16, 2017. The attacks were reportedly planned by wanted terrorist Dawood Ibrahim.
