Written, directed and produced by Ashutosh Gowariker, Swades is a musical drama film which encapsulates the true essence of independence. Independence is more than a mere word, or a status designated to a nation. Independence encapsulates freedom in its purest form, devoid of any complexity. Equal and equitable rights are everyone’s entitlement, something each and every individual is entitled to by birth. As Mohan Bhargava, a scientist employed at NASA, travels back to India after decades and starts to see the deteriorating condition of the country he once knew. His quest for his nanny soon turns into a quest for reform in a place plagued with issues like lack of water, and various other issues.
Resonating with the idea propagated in Dil Se, another movie which takes a deep reflective look at the poor state of the North east owing to the political jargon, as people suffering are silenced with the magnanimous preparations for Independence Day in Delhi. The country celebrates 15th August with great pomp, while villages witness people barely managing to survive. The lack of basic amenities in Charanpur stands in sheer contrast to the cities filled with amenities to the fullest. Mohan’s decision to stay back in India proves patriotism at its best- the desire to serve one’s nation .
