India abstains in UNHRC vote on Sri Lanka

The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) has voted in favor of a resolution against Sri Lanka. So India has refrained from doing so. Twenty-two countries voted in favor of the proposal, while 11 countries, including China and Pakistan, voted against it. Sixteen countries, including India, did not participate in the vote.

India, however, issued a statement on the issue before the vote. In it, India emphasizes two key issues related to human rights in Sri Lanka. In it, India first expressed its support for the Tamil community living in Sri Lanka, while emphasizing equality, peace and justice for them. “India also values ​​Sri Lanka’s unity, stability and territorial integrity,” ie said. India said the two issues should complement each other and Sri Lanka should focus on both issues.

“India is hopeful that the Sri Lankan government will take into account the expectations and aspirations of the Tamil community and work with the international community to ensure the freedom and human rights of the people,” it said.
