India going to host FIFA World Cup soon ?

by Subhechcha Ganguly

PM Modi wants to pursue the ultimate objective of hosting one of the largest sporting events in the world after hosting the U-17 World Cup in 2017 and 2022. The world is engulfed in a football fever, yet India, which makes up 20% of the global population and has a sizable football fan base, is not directly represented in the FIFA World Cup. The audience for the 2018 FIFA World Cup final was 50 million, compared to 30 to 50 million for prior major football events.

In the near future, PM Modi aims to change this and stage a “FIFA-like event” in India, where Indians will joyfully unite and support the tricolour. “Today the teams playing in the Qatar final are between foreign countries, but I can tell with assurance that we will be staging an event like FIFA world cup in India and would cheer for the tricolour,” he remarked while addressing a throng in Tripura on Sunday (the day of the FIFA WC finals).

The promise of hosting an event similar to the World Cup captured the attention of the audience and was well received; they cheered this announcement online. PM Modi previously used a football analogy to connect issues like corruption, nepotism, and discrimination that North-East India has long experienced with the way his government has displayed the red card during the past eight years during a speech in Shillong.

“It is a coincidence that I am surrounded by football fans on the actual football field today, when the Football World Cup final is taking place. A football match is taking place on the opposite side, and as a result, we are competing for improvement on this side of the football field,” the PM was further reported as adding.India held the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 2017 and the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in 2022, so it would be interesting to see if PM Modi’s pledge to host the FIFA World Cup is genuine or just another electioneering ploy.
