After a social media controversy on Thursday in response to the Jama Masjid administration’s directive prohibiting women from entering the revered site in Old Delhi alone or in groups, the Shahi Imam of the Mosque has now received a notification from the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chief.
A few days ago, a notice informing people of the prohibition was posted on the Jama Masjid’s entrance gates. According to the statement, ladies must be accompanied by a male family member in order to enter the Jama Masjid complex. The warning from the administration states, “Entry of a girl, or girls, is not authorised in Jama Masjid. Jama Masjid mein ladki ya ladkiyon ka akele daakhla mana hai.” The decision was made, according to Syed Ahmed Bukhari, the Shahi Imam, after some “incidents” were reportedly recorded on the grounds of the historic building.
“People are welcome to worship at Jama Masjid because it is a place of worship. However, this area is not intended for girls who come alone and wait for their dates. The limitation is placed on that, “Bukhari stated to PTI.When asked why only girls and not boys are prohibited from entering the mosque alone, General Secretary of RWA Jama Masjid Mohd Salman Qureshi responded that although girls are not permitted to join the mosque in Islam, we do not prevent them from doing so out of respect for them. Boys are unstoppable. These announcements are only applicable to girls arriving by themselves.
Both visitors and devotees go to the monument from the Mughal Empire, built in the 17th century.
