The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for seven districts in Kerala as relentless monsoon rains continue to batter the state, raising the risk of flash floods, landslides, and widespread waterlogging. Authorities have urged residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert and avoid unnecessary travel.
According to the IMD, districts across central and northern Kerala are expected to receive extremely heavy rainfall, with several rivers nearing danger levels. The State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has activated emergency response teams, while the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Fire and Rescue Services, and local authorities remain on standby to respond to any emergencies.
Heavy rainfall has already caused flooding in low-lying areas, disrupted road transport, and increased the likelihood of landslides in hilly regions. As a precaution, educational institutions have been closed in several districts, fishing activities have been suspended along the Kerala coast, and residents living in landslide-prone areas have been advised to move to safer locations if instructed by local authorities.
The IMD has warned that the active southwest monsoon is likely to continue affecting Kerala over the next few days before rainfall intensity gradually decreases. Officials have appealed to the public to monitor official weather updates and follow evacuation advisories wherever necessary.
