The Labour Party of Britain, led by Keir Starmer, won a landslide majority, opening a new chapter in the country’s ties with India. These relations had previously been difficult because of the Kashmir dispute.Compared to other British political parties, the Labour Party has historically addressed issues like purported violations of human rights and the Indian occupation of Kashmir with greater vigour.At its annual conference in September 2019, the Labour Party, led by Jeremy Corbyn, approved an emergency motion about the situation in Kashmir.
The resolution claimed that there was a humanitarian catastrophe in the area and that the Kashmiri people should be granted the right to self-determination. It was made in response to the Indian government’s plan to revoke Jammu and Kashmir’s special status in August 2019.India had replied sharply, denouncing the Labour Party’s action under Corbyn as “uninformed and unfounded.”In 2020, Corbyn’s Labour Party membership was suspended due to an argument involving antisemitism. As an Independent running for office, he emerged victorious from Islington North, the constituency he has served since 1983.
An outcry against the resolution, which was perceived as being anti-Indian, was directed towards a number of Labour MPs who are of Indian descent as well as others who had a sizable number of Indian supporters.Now that he is prime minister of Britain, Starmer will probably correct the mistakes his party made in the past. He promised to establish a “new strategic partnership” with India as part of his agenda.”Work will create and fortify contemporary alliances and regional powers. In addition to expanding cooperation in fields like security, education, technology, and climate change, we will look to establish a new strategic partnership with India, which may include a free trade deal,” the statement stated.
David Lammy, the former leader of the Labour Party and current foreign secretary, mentioned continuity in the strategy towards India last month.
