India woke up with shocking news on Monday morning. Our famous Masterji of Kathak dancer is no more with us. Yes, legendary Kathak dancer Birju Maharaj passed away in the early hours of Monday 17th January 2022.
While his children were having dinner, Birju Maharaj was playing with his grandsons. Suddenly his felt uneasy in breathing and collapsed at around 12 am on Monday. He was rushed to the hospital where he was declared dead. Birju Maharaj was having health issues since last month. He was suffering from a kidney ailment and was a heart patient as well.
A recipient of the country’s second-highest civilian award, Padma Vibhushan, he was fondly called Pandit-Ji or Maharaj-Ji by his disciples and legions of followers and was one of India’s best-known artists. Birju Maharaj was a great singer as well with great knowledge of Thumri, Dadra, Bhajan, and Ghazal.
