Legendary Writer Manoj Das Passes Away At 87 In Puducherry


Renowned Odia author, writer, editor, storyteller and columnist Manoj Das passed away at a private hospital in Puducherry on April 27 and left a deep hole in the field of creativity in Odisha.

According to an official report, Das was undergoing treatment in a hospital in Puducherry for old age ailments and his health condition deteriorated gradually and could not revive. He passed away at a Nursing Home in Puducherry at the age of 87 who was also associated with Sri Aurobindo Ashram and was hospitalized for nearly a year at the ashram nursing home with terminal cancer. The ashram informed that he breathed his last at around 8:15 PM.

Manoj Das was awarded Padma Shri in 2001 and Padma Bhusan in 2020, for his contribution in the field of Literature & Education. The Kendra Sahitya Akademi has bestowed its highest award which is also India’s highest literary award i.e Sahitya Akademi Award Fellowship to him.

Many renowned people from Odisha offered condolences and prayed for welfare for his family. Odisha Governor Ganeshi Lal condoled the death of the eminent writer via Twitter quoting – “Das would continue to inspire generations through his timeless literary works.”

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik also offered his condolences to his family members and urged the Pondicherry Government to conduct the last rites of the author with national honour.

Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan also offered his pray in his demise along with Niranjan Patnaik, president of the Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee who also expressed his profound grief.

BJP national vice-president Baijayant Panda while offering his condolences stated that Das’s contribution to Odia and English literature will be remembered for all times to come.

Tourism and Culture Minister Jyotiprakash Panigrahi will attend the last rites of Das in Pondicherry.
