Lt General Chandi Prasad Mohanty is the first Odia officer to be appointed as the next 42nd Vice Chief Army Staff, which is second to the Chief of Army Staff. He is serving as the General Officer Commanding in Chief of Southern Command.

General Chandi Prasad Mohanty was born to Jitendra Kishore Mohanty who was a retired government employee and Sarada Kumari Mohanty who was a former professor in Odia at SVM College Lt Gen Mohanty studied till Class VI at Bagashai UP School in Jagatsinghpur.

In June 1982 he was then commissioned as a second lieutenant in Rajput Regiment. He also served on the borders of Pakistan and China as the illustrious infantry officer who was participating in counter-insurgency operations in Assam and had commenced a multi-national UN brigade in Congo. He also commanded the XXXIII Corps in the Eastern Command and later appointed General Officer Commanding, Uttar Bharat Area at Bareilly.
After the announcement, General Mohanty stated that he will make efforts to motivate Odia Youths for joining the Army. And he will also encourage young Odia women to join the force as they have enough opportunities in the core and military police department.
Regarding the formation of the Kalinga Regiment, he stated that it is very early to say about it and that the Indian Army has set up Naga Regiment after Independence and it has two battalions.
