Scientists have discovered cracks in Antarctica after nearly 10 years of hard work. A large part of the ice from the Brunt Ice Shelf was smashed and separated on Friday. The size of the ice iceberg will be more than double of Mumbai. The ice sheet separated from the iceberg on the morning of February 26.
“Our team was fully prepared for years after receiving a signal that a glacier was separating from the Brunt ice shelf” said Dem Jane Francis, director of BAS. In the coming weeks or months, this huge piece of ice could move away from the original, or it could be around Brunt Iceberg. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Agency, the ice sheet is now floating on water.

This huge iceberg is moving north-east of Antarctica at a rate of about 0.8 miles (1 km) per day. Within hours of the morning of February 26, the distance between the cracks had risen to 100 meters. The ice split is said to have been caused by a natural process. There is no evidence that climate change has a role to play.
In Antarctica, it is normal to break much of the ice. This large-scale natural phenomenon is very rare and exciting.
