In a major breakthrough in the Odisha Police Sub-Inspector (SI) recruitment examination scam, the OdishaCrime Branch on Saturday arrested the prime accused and alleged mastermind, Shankar Prusty, from Uttarakhand near the Nepal border. According to official sources, Shankar Prusty had been absconding since the scam came to light and was believed to be hiding along the Nepal border to evade arrest. After extensive surveillance and coordinated efforts, the Crime Branch team successfully tracked him down and apprehended him.
Shankar is charged with masterminding the widespread irregularities in the SI hiring process, which include question paper leaks and illicit financial exchanges with applicants.
Shankar Prusty, the head of Panchsoft Company and suspected racket mastermind, had already petitioned the Orissa High Court for anticipatory relief. However, Shankar and his wife, Deeptimayee Sahu, had their anticipatory bail pleas denied by the Orissa High Court.
During the hearing, the judge ordered Deeptimayee Sahu to appear in the trial court and submit a standard bail application in accordance with the law. But Shankar had been avoiding capture, as had his wife. There are now major worries about the state’s competitive exams’ openness after the SI exam scandal shook the hiring process.
