Matriarch Of Kamathipura: Know More About Alia Bhatt Starrer Role ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’

Alia Bhatt starrer ‘Gangubhai Kathiawadi’, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali dropped the teaser last month which gained a lot of attention because of the performance of Bhatt where some praises Alia’s look and intense acting performance while some think that Bhansali could have taken a better actor for this role.

The movie is based on the real-life of one of the featured women in ‘Mafia Queens of Mumbai’ -Gangubai Kathiawadi, which was written by S Hussain Zaidi along with Jane Borges. ‘Mafia Queens’ consists of eight profiles of female criminals, who are depicted as being gutsier, far more cunning, and malignant when it came to attempting their goals.

Gangubai Kathiawadi or Ganga Harjeevan Das Kathiawadi was an Indian criminal, don, sex worker, businesswoman, and the most controversial figure from Kathiawar, India. Born in 1939 in Kathiawar, Gangubai came from a well-settled family and was the only girl child in her family. She studied at a local government school in Gujarat but didn’t study further after schooling.

According to Hussain Zaidi’s ‘Mafia Queens of Mumbai’, Gangubai at the age of sixteen fell in love with her father’s assistance and eloped with him to Mumbai. But later the assistance sold her with Rs 500 and was forced to become a sex worker.

But slowly she gained compassion towards the other women from the community and used her influence to champion the rights of sex workers. She gradually increased her power through her links with the Mumbai underworld where she maintained and operated many brothels in the red light district in Mumbai. From ‘Gangubai’ she became the ‘Madam of Kamathipura’ and became a very influential figure in Mumbai.

Because of her personal experience as a sex slave, Gangubai requested then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru to address difficulties encountered by sex workers and tried her best to improve the living conditions in Kamathipura. She pays for the medical treatment, allows aging sex workers to retire with a pension, and also permits women who want to leave the sex business and return homes.

As per the reports, Gangubai has died of old age between 1975 and 1978 and is termed as the most influential person to bring women empowerment and the right to work for the sex workers.

The movie is all set to release on July 30 this year and will also cast Ajay Devgan, Vijay Raaz, and Seema Pahwa in their pivotal role.
