The Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC) has initiated an inquiry into the role of Dr Sushrut Ghaisas, a treating doctor at Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital (DMH), following the death of a 37-year-old pregnant woman last month who was allegedly denied timely treatment.
Taking suo motu cognisance of the incident, the MMC issued a show-cause notice to Dr Ghaisas on April 9, seeking a detailed explanation. A hearing was scheduled for Monday, but Dr Ghaisas failed to appear, citing a case recently filed against him by the Alankar police. In an email sent to the MMC on Sunday evening, he informed the council of his inability to attend the proceedings.
“Despite the absence of Dr Ghaisas, a large number of the deceased woman’s family members and relatives were present for the hearing,” said Dr Vinky Rughwani, MMC administrator. “We have received the treatment records from DMH. However, to complete the investigation, medical records from Surya Hospital, Indira IVF, and Manipal Hospital will also be requisitioned.”
Dr Ghaisas has already been booked for medical negligence based on the findings of an expert panel from Sassoon General Hospital. According to MMC officials, if found guilty of professional misconduct, Dr Ghaisas could face strict disciplinary action — ranging from a temporary suspension of his license to a permanent cancellation of his registration.
The tragic case has raised serious concerns about emergency care protocols and accountability in private hospitals. The MMC assured that the inquiry would be conducted thoroughly and transparently, with all parties being given a fair opportunity to present their version of events.
The next steps in the inquiry will follow once all required documents are reviewed and statements recorded.
