A spirit of scientific curiosity and exploration took centre stage at the Dhenkanal Science Centre on Sunday as National Space Day was celebrated with enthusiastic participation from around 150 students representing various educational institutions across Dhenkanal City.
Organised by the Dhenkanal Science Centre, a unit of National Council of Science Museums (NCSM), Ministry of Culture, Government of India, the programme sought to introduce young minds to the fascinating world of space science, rocketry and scientific experimentation through interactive and engaging activities.
The highlight of the celebration was a hands-on Model Rocketry Workshop, where students were introduced to the basic principles of rocketry and space technology. The workshop provided participants with an opportunity to move beyond theoretical learning and understand scientific concepts through practical experimentation.
M. M. Rout, District Science Officer, Dhenkanal Science Centre, delivered the welcome address and conducted the workshop. Through a thematic presentation, he familiarised the students with different aspects of rocketry, space science and their practical applications, encouraging them to explore the subject with greater interest and curiosity.
The programme also featured an interactive question-and-answer session on rocket science and rocketry technology. Students actively engaged with the session, raising questions about rockets, space exploration and related technologies. The interaction offered them an opportunity to clarify their doubts and gain a deeper understanding of the science behind space missions.
The celebration continued with a science film screening, giving the students an engaging visual introduction to scientific concepts and various aspects of space-related subjects. The screening added an informative and entertaining dimension to the programme while reinforcing the importance of science communication among young learners.
The event reflected the Dhenkanal Science Centre’s efforts to make science education more interactive, experiential and accessible to students. By combining hands-on activities, expert interaction and visual learning, the National Space Day celebration encouraged participants to look at space science not merely as a subject of study, but as a field driven by curiosity, innovation and exploration.
Shankar Gurung, Education Assistant, Dhenkanal Science Centre, coordinated the programme and proposed the vote of thanks. The successful participation of students highlighted the growing interest among young learners in space science and scientific discovery.
