Former US ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley has cautioned that Washington’s relations with New Delhi are at a “critical inflexion point,” urging the Donald Trump administration to prevent trade frictions from undermining a strategic partnership vital for countering China.
In an opinion piece co-authored with Bill Drexel of the Hudson Institute for Newsweek, Haley said that weakening ties with India would amount to “scuttling 25 years of momentum” and warned such a move could become a “strategic disaster” for US interests in Asia.
Her warning comes just days after President Trump signed an executive order on August 6 imposing an additional 25% tariff on Indian imports over New Delhi’s continued purchase of Russian oil. This move follows a separate 25% tariff on Indian goods that Trump had already approved on July 31.
Key Highlights from Haley’s Op-Ed:
-
Tariff tensions: Haley acknowledged concerns over India’s Russian oil imports but argued that punishing New Delhi with tariffs risks treating a close partner like an adversary.
-
India vs. China: She emphasized that India should be valued as a democratic ally, not lumped with China, which has escaped similar sanctions despite its large-scale Russian oil purchases.
-
Strategic importance: Haley highlighted India’s potential to serve as a large-scale alternative to China in global supply chains, especially in textiles, mobile phones, and solar panels.
-
Security cooperation: Pointing to India’s growing defence ties with Washington, she stressed that India is becoming an indispensable player in safeguarding global security.
-
Advice to both sides: Haley urged India to take Trump’s concerns seriously but pressed the White House to “reverse the downward spiral” by holding direct talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and investing greater diplomatic resources in the relationship.
Haley concluded that India is “the only country that can serve as a counterweight to Chinese dominance in Asia,” stressing that the US cannot afford to jeopardize the partnership at this juncture.
