Nila Madhav Panda’s Film ‘Kalira Atita’ In The Academy Award Race

Odia movie ‘‘Kalira atita’( Yesterday’s Past)  directed by Odia filmmaker Nila Madhav Panda has been selected for the Academy Award this year. The movie starring Pitobash Tripathy in lead has made the entry to Oscars in the general category for Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Director among other categories. 

Director Nila Madhav Panda shared his happiness through Twitter quoting- “In a year full of challenges, feel extremely happy to announce #KaliraAtita has made its entry into the Oscar race in general entry category 4 Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Director & many other categories. It’s being made available for academy screening, Grateful to everyone.” 

‘Kalira Atita’ is a story about the impact of climate change and how it impacts a man who lost his family and home to the sea. The movie also showcases the harsh reality of climate change and rising sea levels, highlighting the environmental issues and the societal changes. 

The movie is inspired by the prophecies of Achyutnanda Das, a 16th-century saint from Odisha where he had written about doomsday in his famous book titled ‘Achutananda Malika’. The movie is about a resident of Satavaya village in the Kendrapada district that has been swallowed by the sea.

The movie had also been selected at the Indian Panorama Section at the 51st International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa for the feature film category.
