Nirmala Sitharaman Stuns in Elegant Cream Saree with Madhubani Border for Her Historic 8th Budget Presentation

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman made a historic mark by presenting her eighth consecutive Union Budget, the longest-serving finance minister in independent India to do so. For Budget 2025, Sitharaman once again turned heads with her sartorial choice, donning a stunning cream saree with a traditional gold border and a contrasting red blouse. Her minimalist accessories, including gold bangles, a chain, and earrings, complemented her outfit beautifully.

However, it was the intricate Madhubani border on the saree that captured attention. The colorful motifs pay tribute to India’s rich cultural heritage and specifically honor the work of Dulari Devi, a 2021 Padma Shri awardee. Madhubani art, originating from the Mithila region of Bihar, is known for its vibrant colors and intricate geometric patterns, often depicting nature and mythology.

Sitharaman’s decision to wear the Madhubani-bordered saree goes beyond fashion—it’s a tribute to the traditional art form and its artisans. The finance minister’s saree choice also recognizes Devi’s contribution to preserving this art form. When Sitharaman visited the Mithila Art Institute in Madhubani for a credit outreach event, she met Devi, who gifted her the saree and encouraged her to wear it for the historic budget presentation.

In making this gesture, Sitharaman not only highlighted her personal style but also promoted the enduring legacy of Madhubani art and its continued importance in India’s cultural landscape.
