Surjit Bhujabal, an Odisha-born Indian Revenue Services (IRS) officer, has been named Director General of GST Intelligence (DGGI), an apex intelligence organisation operating under the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs, Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance.
He is the first Odia officer to be entrusted with the task of collecting, collating, and disseminating intelligence on Goods and Services Tax (GST) and Central Excise and Service Tax evasion across India.
The DGGI is the overarching body in charge of combating the threat of duty evasion. It develops intelligence, particularly in new areas of tax evasion, through its nationwide intelligence network and disseminates such information by issuing Modus Operandi Circulars and Alert Circulars to inform field formations about the latest trends in duty evasion.
