The Odisha Cabinet approved the proposal for a State Level Sports Infrastructure Development Project which is worth an estimated outlay of Rs 356.38 which will be used for the development of the infrastructure of Kalinga Stadium and the construction of a new hockey stadium at Rourkela.
As earlier, it was declared that the new hockey stadium at Rourkela will organize the FIH Men’s World Cup Hockey 2023 due to which the infrastructure and the structure along with all the facilities should be of top-class. Odisha will host the FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup-2023 in both the venues- Bhubaneswar and Rourkela.
The main two components by the State Level Sports Infrastructure Development Project are – Expansion of the Kalinga Stadium Sports Complex and the construction of a new International Hockey Stadium in Rourkela which will host the FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup 2023.
In the new International Hockey Stadium, Rourkela the capacity will be of around 20,000 spectators and this is termed to be the largest hockey stadium in India.
As per the reports the Odisha Government has placed High-Performance Centres (HPCs) in several sports disciplines at Kalinga Stadium in partnership with various corporates and elite sportspersons. And to provide to the condition of the HPCs and other sports disciplines, expansion and up-gradation of the infrastructure facilities at Kalinga Stadium will also be made.
The report further stated that out of the estimated cost of Rs 356.38 crore, around Rs 90 crore will be allocated through the budgetary allocation of the State government, spreading across three financial years starting from 2020-21. Whereas the remaining money will be funded through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), District Mineral Foundation, Sundargarh, and Odisha Sports Development Fund (OSDF) and it is estimated that the project will be completed by 16 months.
