The Odisha State Transport Authority has chosen to provide the average citizen in Odisha the ability to report such violations using a mobile application in an effort to reduce helmetless riding and its potential effects. Through the ‘Citizens Sentinel’ smartphone application, citizens may now report traffic infractions, including driving without a helmet. Under the “No Helmet Violation” option, citizens must post images or videos of persons riding without helmets. After verification, e-challans will be sent to the offenders.
An official advised that when taking images or videos to document the infringement, individuals should make careful to accurately record the vehicle number and the infraction. The individual who reported the offense will remain anonymous. The official said, “Other traffic infractions will be added in the future to the Citizen Sentinel option.”
According to research, two-wheelers were involved in 34% of the state’s traffic-related deaths in 2022. Up to 1695 individuals lost their lives and 2615 suffered injuries as a result of not wearing helmets. Although it is required for pillion riders to wear a helmet, driving helmets are rarely worn.
