To handle the rapidly expanding population of the state, the Odisha government intends to build a new metropolis close to Bhubaneswar. At Lok Seva Bhawan on Friday, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi reviewed the Housing and Urban Development (H&UD) Department’s projects and initiatives and spoke with senior officials about the plan. Apart from the new city, the government is also thinking of creating a Greater Economic Region in the Jagatsinghpur district that would include Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Puri, and Paradip.

This ambitious project intends to ensure long-term urban and economic sustainability by developing an expansive 8,500 sq km region with top-notch infrastructure. The plan is a major step in realizing the goal of a Viksit Odisha (Developed Odisha) by 2036 and is intended to meet the region’s demands for the next fifty years. The Bhubaneswar Metro Rail Project, which is anticipated to improve connectivity and reduce traffic in the city and adjacent regions, was also evaluated by the chief minister. In the upcoming decades, Odisha is expected to become a major industrial and economic center because to the government’s strategic focus on infrastructural development and urban growth.
