Eight significant steps have been made by the state administration to improve security infrastructure at popular tourist destinations in Odisha after the U.S. travel advice for India was reissued in June 2025, citing worries about crime and safety in the state. These measures have been put in place to protect visitors and improve Odisha’s reputation as a safe vacation destination, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi told the state parliament on Monday.
In a written reply to a question by Bhawanipatna (SC) MLA Sagar Charan Das, the Chief Minister stated that the eight measures being taken are:
- Regular police patrolling and deployment of police personnel at tourist sites.
- Intensified night checks.
- Installation of CCTV cameras on key approach roads.
- Joint enforcement with the Excise Department against illegal liquor sales.
- Strict vehicle safety checks.
- Additional deployment of personnel during yatras and festive gatherings.
- Coordination with temple committees for volunteer support.
- Operation of police beat houses at temples during the festival season.
To enhance the state’s reputation as a travel destination, the administration is also launching public safety initiatives. These include installing tourist assistance signboards at entrance points and prominent sites, organizing awareness campaigns with local youth clubs and non-governmental organizations under the motto “Safe Tourism, Safe Odisha,” and giving SDPOs/IsICs directives to hold frequent safety briefings with local committees.
