By introducing its Green Hydrogen Policy, Odisha made a historic move toward a low-carbon future and established itself as a leader among Indian states in the fight for clean energy and industrial decarbonization. Deputy Chief Minister KV Singh Deo, who also oversees the Energy ministry, presided over a high-level meeting where the news was made. Key industry players and senior Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) executives took part in the discussions.
Large-scale green hydrogen production, floating solar projects, pumped storage hydropower projects, and the installation of battery energy storage systems are all part of the state government’s ambitious plan to accelerate the expansion of renewable energy. The goal of the strategy, according to officials, is to establish a strong ecosystem for green hydrogen that includes incentives for its production, storage, and use in energy-intensive industries like chemicals, steel, and aluminum.
The effort is anticipated to draw significant investments from both domestic and foreign firms, according to Deputy Chief Minister Singh Deo. The state has already seen substantial industry proposals for the production of green hydrogen, especially in the vicinity of ports like Gopalpur and Paradip. In line with national objectives under India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission, key priorities highlighted include increasing the capacity for renewable energy and producing green hydrogen in the upcoming years. The action is anticipated to boost energy security, create jobs, and establish Odisha as a top location for sustainable investments.
Stakeholders from CII welcomed the development, noting strong industry interest and readiness to collaborate on project implementation. The policy is seen as a timely boost for Odisha’s transition from traditional energy sources while leveraging its natural resources and strategic coastal advantages.
