Bhubaneswar: In a major step toward enhancing water resource management, the Odisha government has decided to implement sensor-based Internet of Things (IoT) devices to monitor Community Lift Irrigation Projects (CLIPs) across the state. The initiative will begin with the deployment of these smart monitoring systems in 37,000 CLIPs.
The decision was taken during a high-level meeting held at Lokseva Bhawan on Friday, chaired by Anu Garg, Development Commissioner-cum-Additional Chief Secretary of the Water Resources Department.
The IoT-based system will enable real-time tracking of water distribution, project performance, and operational efficiency. This technology-driven approach is aimed at improving governance, ensuring better maintenance, and optimising resource use in the state’s lift irrigation infrastructure.
Officials from the Odisha Lift Irrigation Corporation (OLIC), Odisha Computer Application Centre (OCAC), and the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation (RWSS) department were present at the meeting and discussed various aspects of the technical implementation.
“This marks a transformational step in the way we manage water resources in Odisha,” said an official present at the meeting. The first phase of the rollout is expected to commence soon, with long-term plans to expand the system across all irrigation schemes in the state.
By integrating IoT into irrigation monitoring, Odisha aims to ensure sustainable agricultural practices, improve farmer access to water, and strengthen the state’s resilience to climate challenges.
