Odisha To Perform Last Rites Of Organ Donors With Full State Honours

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik declared on Thursday that those who bravely donate their organs to save the lives of others shall be honored with full state honours at their final rites. The Chief Minister expressed the hope that this will inspire people to donate organs in order to save the lives of others and raise public awareness of the issue. Giving an organ is a wonderful gift. When a loved one suffers brain death, their courageous decision to permit organ donation can save the lives of countless others.

In order to streamline the organ transplant procedure, the State Organ & Tissues Transplant Organization (SOTTO) was founded by the state government in 2019. The Odisha government launched “Suraj Puraskar” in 2020 to promote organ donation. It is noteworthy that Suraj, a resident of the Ganjam district’s Bhanjanagar area, is the name behind the introduction of this prize. Suraj lost consciousness after suffering severe injuries in a car accident. Suraj’s family made the decision to donate his essential organs. Six lives were saved by these essential organs.

Rs 5 lakh is being provided from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund to the relatives of the organ donors. Along with this, the Chief Minister is also honouring the next of kin of organ donors on World Organ Donation Day on August 13th every year.
